Add copper lining and caps to the holes of your big hole beads for a more finished and polished look, to protect your stringing materials, and add even more design possibilities to larger format beads. We will be coring beads made on 1/8” and 1/4” mandrels but will discuss other sizes and other metals you can use.

Details

  • If you are taking the Intermediate Lampworking: Big Hole Beads class the day before, your beads will be ready to come out of the annealing kilns for you to remove from the mandrels during this class.
  • You are welcome to take this class independent of the Big Hole Bead class, but bring a few beads made on 1/8” and/or 1/4” mandrels to line.

Materials

  • A $7 materials fee, included in the class price, includes soft glass.
  • Students need to supply their own beads made on 1/8” and/or 1/4” mandrels to line. These can be made in the Intermediate Lampworking: Big Hole Beads class the day before or made independently.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.

  • Wear long pants and closed toe shoes.

  • The studio will provide safety glasses but bring your own if you have a pair you prefer.

Instructor
Laura Arns

Although she's a computer scientist by day, Laura Arns has been working with glass in various ways for more than 20 years during her free time. As a lampworker, she is somewhat unusual because she hasn't specialized but instead works with both borosilicate and soft glass to create beads, marbles, blown ornaments, sculptures, goblets, and more. She particularly enjoys collaborative projects with artists and artisans who work in other mediums. Over the years, she's had the opportunity to learn from numerous well-known lampworkers. A former college professor, she's looking forward to more teaching in BARN's Glass Arts Studio.
