Learn how to handle much larger masses of glass while making big hole beads to use larger stringing material or beads for European style charm bracelets.

Details

  • You’ll use 1/8” and 1/4” mandrels to make your beads. We’ll discuss and demonstrate making beads on even larger mandrels, too.
  • If you’d like to add a metal core to your beads to protect your stringing materials or for additional design possibilities, pair this class with Big Hole Bead Beadlining.
  • This class is helpful preparation if you’re taking the Twisted Cane and Portal Beads with Heather Trimlett class during Handwork 2027.

Prerequisite

  • An introductory course like Beadmaking Experience or Introduction to Torchwork: Beads, and additional practice forming simple round and disk shaped beads are ideal preparation for this class.

Materials

  • A $43 materials cost covers everything you need for this class.
  • You’re welcome to bring your own soft glass.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • Wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants of natural fibers. Wear closed-toe shoes, preferably leather or cotton. Stretch fabrics are prohibited.

Instructor
Laura Arns

Although she's a computer scientist by day, Laura Arns has been working with glass in various ways for more than 20 years during her free time. As a lampworker, she is somewhat unusual because she hasn't specialized but instead works with both borosilicate and soft glass to create beads, marbles, blown ornaments, sculptures, goblets, and more. She particularly enjoys collaborative projects with artists and artisans who work in other mediums. Over the years, she's had the opportunity to learn from numerous well-known lampworkers. A former college professor, she's looking forward to more teaching in BARN's Glass Arts Studio.
