How can poetry help us process and express the challenges of modern life? In this workshop, we will attempt to answer this question through exploring contemporary poems on relationships, mental health, and other topics from young poets such as Sarah Kay, Fatimah Asghar, and Tommy Pico to understand what it means to write poetry in today’s complicated world.

In each class, students will chat about the week’s poems and will be offered prompts to experiment writing in various free verse forms, inspired by the week’s readings. Students will also read and comment on each other’s poems in a welcoming, relaxed workshop space. The workshop’s three sessions will culminate in students creating and sharing mini collections of original poems.

Instructor Bio:

Ansley Clark is a poet and teacher with ten years of experience teaching creative writing and literature to students of all ages. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Colorado and is currently earning her MEd in Curriculum & Design, specializing in Literacy, Language, & Culture, from the University of Washington. Her poems and essays have appeared in Poetry Northwest, Crazyhorse, Hobart, Black Warrior Review, and elsewhere. In addition to teaching creative writing and language arts to all ages, she also edits the online literary arts journal 'The Thought Erotic' and designs and teaches arts-based antiracism and body positivity workshops.
