Spend three days this summer becoming qualified to work on your own projects in BARN's Woodworking & Small Boatbuilding Studio. This class groups three classes that are usually offered independently and waives the fees usually charged. The Woodworking Studio is eager to encourage more youth to become involved.

Session 1: Orientation to the Woodworking Studio: Monday, 6/29, 3-4 PM

  • How the studio works.
  • How to participate in Open Studio and work well in a community space.
  • General safety and studio guidelines.

Session 2: Woodworking Tool Safety Checkout 1: Tuesday, 6/30, 3-6 PM

  • Table saws
  • Planers
  • Jointers
  • Miter saw
  • Drill presses

Session 3: Woodworking Tool Safety Checkout 2: Wednesday, 7/1, 3-6 PM 

  • Routers and router tables
  • Oscillating sander
  • Disc sander
  • Drum sander
  • Edge sander
  • Bandsaws
  • Scroll saws
Students who complete this series gain access to work during Woodworking Open Studio sessions (30 hours per week) and meet the prerequisites for most woodworking classes at BARN.

Details

  • Registration is required.
  • Skill level: Beginner, no experience necessary.
  • You must complete all three sessions to qualify to use the Woodworking & Small Boatbuilding Studio during Open Studio. 
  • Please be on time for class. A lot of essential information is covered in these sessions. If you're more than 15 minutes late, you may not be able to join the class.
 

Class Policies

  • Wear closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid wearing dangling clothing or jewelry.
  • You will be required to wear safety glasses at all times in the woodworking studio. Bring your own if you have them, or borrow from the shop once you arrive.
Instructor
Richard Mander

Richard Mander grew up in New Zealand, immersed in home renovation and boat building. He is active in the Woodshop as a safety monitor, manager, and safety lead. His interests include machine and hand tool work, and helping others make the most of their experience at BARN.

Instructor
Jeanne Huber

A founding member of BARN, Jeanne worked on her homes for years, then had a chance to become immersed in woodworking through the Preservation Carpentry program at North Bennet Street School in Boston. After working briefly as a carpenter in Cambridge, she was hired as an editor at This Old House magazine and went on to write for other magazines, Sunset Books and the Washington Post.
