You'll start with a piece of hardwood that has a groove cut into one side. Then you'll shape a mating piece that slides into that groove and make other features of the hinge, which includes bass rods that you'll cut to length and fit into holes you drill.

You'll also drill a recess for the interior of your box, smooth out the wood, and apply a natural wax finish. Along the way, you'll gain experience with a variety of tools and wind up with a beautiful little box that you can keep or give as a gift.

• Ages 12-16 are welcome.
• You must wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid dangling jewelry and clothing. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.
