About

This class builds skills and demonstrates how turning wooden boxes is an enjoyable, creative pastime. This box can be used to hold small items - candy, rings, trinkets - or given as a gift or simply featured in your decor.

Create and finish a classic cylindrical box with a fitted lid from a single piece of stock. You will use not only familiar tools such as a roughing gouge, spindle gouge, and parting tool; but also a negative rake scraper plus a skew, which will improve the quality of the surface and provide crisp transitions. You will learn the sequence of steps that must be followed to successfully complete a box with a precision fit to the top, and how to create and use a jam chuck for finishing the bottom.

Details

  • This class is designed for turners who have mastered the basics and want to expand their techniques.
  • You must wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid loose-fitting clothing and jewelry.
  • We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.

Prerequisites

  • Intro to Woodturning, Wood Lathe Tool Sharpening, and Orientation to the Woodshop classes.
  • Log in to your BARN account and click on "My event registrations" to ensure you will have completed the required prerequisites before this class begins.
  • If you have woodturning experience but haven't taken Intro to Woodturning at BARN, you may schedule a private session to demonstrate those skills in lieu of that class. Contact Jamie Straw at (360) 551-9233 at least 10 days before this class.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Instructor
Bob Abresch

Bob has been an avid woodworker from an early age, having helped his father with miscellaneous projects and later building several houses. He began his woodturning journey shortly after BARN opened the new facility and quickly became hooked. Over the last several years he has taken more advanced turning classes and has assisted with the introductory and bowl turning classes here at BARN. He has also been the lead instructor for the wooden box and hollow form classes.
