About

This wood turning class will begin by selecting the best section of a log to turn a natural edge bowl.  This is an Intermediate class that requires a prerequisite of Introduction to Woodturning or equivalent. (See below).  A blank will be provided that has already been cut to size using a chain saw.  You will learn proper ways to mount the blank to get the desired natural edge bowl.  Students will learn to use a bowl gouge for the majority of the turning.  In addition, you will also be shown the proper and safe way too use a bowl scraper and each student will complete turning a natural edge bowl.  Students will be using green wood (fresh cut).   Techniques will be demonstrated on how to finish and sand the completed bowl. Because green wood is being used the finishing of the bowl will have to be done during an Open Studio session or at home.

Number of Sessions: 1 four-hour session

Details:

  • Open to students who have taken BARN's "Introduction to Bowl Turning" or demonstrated equivalent lathe safety and turning skills during a private studio session with Jamie Straw.  If you have not taken this prerequisite, you must call JamieStraw, (360) 551-9233, to make arrangements for skill review before registering for this Turning Natural Edge Bowl class.
  • While this class is oriented to intermediate turners, it is also appropriate and useful for experienced turners who wish to acquire or improve their gouge skills as they relate to turning natural edge bowls.
  • There is a materials fee of $5 that will be added to the cost of class. The materials fee is for the bowl blank and consumables.  This fee is in addition to the class fee and will be collected online as you register and pay.
