Kirk Smith, a Bainbridge woodcarver who studied at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland and worked under sculptor Mañuel Izquierdo, will talk about his personal approach to woodcarving. Smith will show finished pieces, discuss roughing and finishing tools, and tool maintenance. He will also touch on how to "read" wood for issues such as grain and taper that affect carving and the final look of a piece. (Smith's "Salmon Boy" carving is shown in the picture.)

The show-and-tell is timely, because shrinking daylight hours and approaching holidays make this a time of the year when many woodworkers relish working on a project or two. Bring your projects -- completed or not -- and share what you did and the challenges you faced. Projects can range from simple, quick gift ideas to elaborate, season-long projects. Or bring an idea of a project you'd like to tackle and get suggestions on how to proceed.

The business portion of the meeting will include voting on a proposed organizational plan for the Woodshop.
