About

Work on projects of your own choosing in BARN’s spectacularly equipped Woodworking & Small Boatbuilding Studio. Open Studio time is a collaborative, informal-learning situation where woodworkers of various skill levels share tips and offer a hand when needed. A trained safety monitor is always on duty.

Details:

  • BARN is practicing safety measures for the health and well-being of all participants, in accordance with state and CDC guidelines. Thus, up to 15 woodworkers may be in the shop at a time.  If the shop is at capacity, you may be asked to come back later.
  •  Everyone is required to wear masks, wash or sanitize hands frequently, maintain a distance of 6 feet between individuals, and stay home if they are sick. Overall BARN safety policies are here. Studio-specific safety policies are here.
  • To be eligible to work during our Open Studio hours, you must take our free one-hour Orientation to the Woodshop class.
  • To use specific power tools, you must also take appropriate tool safety checkout classes. Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1 qualifies you for the jointers, planers, table saws, chop saw and drill presses. Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2 covers the band saws, routers and router tables, scroll saws and three stationary sanding machines: edge, drum and spindle. Check the Woodworking and Small Boatbuilding Studio calendar for class dates.
  • BARN supplies tools and basic shop supplies, such as sandpaper. Participants are expected to bring their own wood, hardware, etc.
  • Free for members.
  • Protective eye wear that complies with ANSI Standard Z87 or the equivalent European Union Standard EN 166 is required at all times in the main shop and when using sharpening equipment in the bench room. Avoid loose clothing and wear closed-toe shoes. Noisy equipment may warrant wearing hearing protection.
