This hands-on introduction is the first of a four-part series. It is a 3 hour combined class. Class size is 4 people facilitating one-on-one learning and direct mentoring. Each participant will have the use of a fully equipped TIG welding station.

TIG welding is generally recognized as the welding technique of choice for artisans and more exotic materials including aluminum and stainless steel.  TIG welding is a lower amperage precision arc welding process particularly useful in artwork and metal sculpture.

The class includes shop safety and hazard awareness and proper use of Personal Protection Equipment. There is a brief introduction to welding theory and proper preparation of materials.  Each student will go through the set up process for TIG welding on a Miller 215 Welder. 

After the introduction, there will be approximately 2 hours to 2 ½ hours of hands-on instruction in making a weld bead, different types of welds, and torch manipulation.  Mentoring will be from a professional TIG welder.

At the end of the initial class, students should be able to lay down a weld bead, identify the characteristics of a good bead, and problem solve for the causes of incorrect beads. In addition, the student should be able to preform a butt weld, a lap weld, a T weld, a corner weld, and an edge weld.

Students should be comfortable undertaking independent practice of technique or starting their own projects. 

There will be an additional materials fee of $11 for steel coupons, gas, tungsten, filler rod. The materials fee will be added to the cost of the class and totaled when you register and pay online. If you write a check, please be sure to include the materials fee in your total.

The following is required from each participant:

• Long sleeve shirt and pants both natural fiber clothing

Patrick  Clanton is a professional welder with more than 30 years of experience. He participates in the artisan community on Bainbridge as a welder in support of other artists and as a sculptor in his own right.
