About

A Two-Part Class with Holly Hughes—Writer, Poet, Editor, Teacher

With the new year, are you ready to breathe new life into your prose? Consider what poetry has to offer: economy of language, concentrated emotion, imaginative metaphors~and that's just for starters.

Here's your chance to take a few word tricks from poets and see if they might liven up your language. Together we'll look at examples of poets and prose writers who make good use of imagery and metaphor, then try a few writing prompts ourselves. You'll leave with a list of recommended poets and prose writers to read, and some writing prompts to try on your own.

Each three hour session will include writing time and a chance to share and receive constructive feedback in a supportive setting. In addition, you'll receive feedback on an assignment by the instructor.

Holly J. Hughes is coauthor of The Pen and The Bell: Mindful Writing in a Busy World, author of Passings and Sailing by Ravens and editor of the anthology Beyond Forgetting: Poetry and Prose about Alzheimer's Disease. She has taught writing at Edmonds Community College for more than 25 years as well as at regional conferences and workshops, including LitFuse, FishTrap, Write on the Sound, the North Cascades Institute and Pacific Lutheran University's low-residency MFA program, the Rainier Writer's Workshop.

Attendance is limited to 15.
