About

Transfer printing is the process of copying some or all of a design from one thing onto another thing. Men's silk ties are a fantastic source of transfer patterns!

This is a great way to create a lasting memory from a collection of ties belonging to a loved one. Or, perhaps your creative inspiration will come from a few great thrift store finds.

You'll be provided with all the materials (including ties) for creating a unique, wearable scarf. Along the way, you'll learn all the techniques you need to continue your transfer printing adventures at home in the future with ties from your own stash.

Details

  • A materials fee of $6, included in the cost of the cast, covers a silk scarf, transfer solution, and cordage (provided by the instructor). This one-time, uniquely low fee is possible due to a generous donation of men's silk ties for this class! These ties will be deconstructed in advance
  • You should plan to print from the provided ties. However, you may bring a few of your own ties if you wish to learn how to take them apart for future use.
  • You should bring a zip lock bag to carry your scarf home if it's still damp.
  • You may bring your favorite scissors (but the studio also will have some on hand).

Project

You will design and create a beautiful, printed 11" x 60" habotai (a type of a plain-weave silk cloth renowned for its fineness, light weight, softness, and sheen) silk scarf from a collage of patterns drawn from men's silk ties.

Class Policies

  • Ages 12 and up are welcome.
  • Skill Level: All levels, including beginners
  • Rubber gloves, an apron, and closed-toe shoes are appropriate for the dye lab.
