About

Accordion books have been around for millennia. It is believed they form the link between scrolls, the first books made, and the codex, the most common book form used today. Accordions are easy to make and can be endlessly flexible. In this class we will share images and explore three types of accordion forms. Accordions with Pockets, Accordions with Flower-Fold pages, and Flag Books. We will start with the basics by discussing paper weight, paper grain and paper folding, then we will move on to design our books. By the end of class, you will have three distinct accordion book forms of your own making.

Instructors

Lynn Agnew makes artists books, prints and works with fibers. She has taught for many years at levels from elementary school to adult. She enjoys sharing her skills and working collaboratively. Her own work focusses on human impact on the natural environment. Her work can be found in private collections, museums, and special collections at universities around the country.

Amy Goldthwaite has enjoyed working with her hands since she was a child. From building environments for her troll dolls, to creating beaded necklaces, party decorations, sculpture and bookmaking, Amy has practiced her hand eye coordination. She enjoys mastering thorny design challenges and exploring all things paper and fiber related.

Details

Paper, glue, decorative papers, rubber stamps, colored pens and pencils, hole punches, scissors, cutting and folding tools and mats all will be provided.

If you have a favorite decorative paper or a piece of ephemera you’ve been itching to work with, bring it along.
