In this introductory class you will learn the process for recycling cellulose fiber into new handmade paper.

First, you will break down egg cartons and brown paper bags by soaking them in hot water and blending them in a blender. The pulp will then be distributed to bins, and mixed with more water to create a consistency that is appropriate for “pulling sheets.”

You will then practice pulling sheets of paper, experimenting with the thickness and consistency of the pulp and the finished paper. You will learn basic paper making techniques including pulling thin sheets, pulling thicker sheets, and “couching” (pronounced “coo-ching”), which is transferring your newly made paper onto our fabric to let it dry.

You will press your new sheets of paper for at least 24 hours, and then transfer them to drying racks. After this you will be able to collect your sheets and create more handmade projects with them in other BARN studios!

No experience is necessary, only an interest in and excitement about creating new things.

Details

A $5 materials fee is included in the cost of this class. The instructor will provide some materials for some of the paper being made.

You will need to bring 1 or 2 egg cartons or brown paper bags that will be broken down for their fiber.

Class Policies

• Ages 12 and up are welcome.
• Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little bit wet, or an apron to cover your clothes.
• Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are recommended for the dye lab as you'll be on your feet for most of the class.
