Baskets are vessels, containers which enclose a volume of space. In this class, students will explore this creative concept by weaving a capacious rounded form, using a simple open twining technique. 

Twining is a type of weaving utilized by cultures all around the world. Students will create a structural framework, or skeleton, using rattan reed, and open twining. Once the forms are complete, students will learn how to cover their structures with layers of fine tissue and rice papers to create a translucent skin. The surface then becomes like a painter’s canvas. It may be embellished with a collage of special papers, perhaps your own handmade papers, pressed plants or found objects. When displayed in a window or used as a luminary, light filtering through these basket vessels will offer a glimpse of their beautifully patterned structure.

Skill Level: Intermediate - twining experience is necessary.

Instructor Bio: Kay Harradine has been teaching basketry throughout the US and Canada for over thirty years. With degrees in Forestry and Education from the University of Washington, she brings both ethnobotanical knowledge and strong teaching skills to her workshops. Kay encourages exploration of many types of materials and the technologies for their use. All her workshops are innovative and fun.
