This small basket and the techniques students will learn are inspired by the basketry of the Peoples of the Mid-Columbia River, it’s tributaries, and the plateau above. George Hart will guide students through learning to graph their own design and to twine the designs using multiple colors into a small example of a “sally bag” style basket. Students will learn techniques using non-traditional materials and their own designs to make this approximately 3” tall by 2” diameter, finely twined basket.

There is an additional Materials Fee of $25 per student. Please bring cash or check made out to BARN to the beginning of class.

Skill Level: Universal -- all skill levels are welcome. Knowing how to twine is helpful.

Age Level: 14+

Please bring a bag lunch. We have a refrigerator for storage.

Instructor Bio: George Hart grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. He is a recently retired Fish and Wildlife Biologist who has always felt a strong connection to nature. George devoted many years to the gathering, harvesting, and preparation of native plant materials, with his wife Jo Ann, before he developed his own interest in basket making. When he did finally attempt his first basket, his wife couldn’t help notice that the weaving seemed to come naturally to him. George has studied with many native and non-native fiber artists, and has also studied carving with Duane Pasco. He has been a member of the NW Basket Weavers Guild for many years. His preferred techniques are coiling and twining. He likes learning about all kinds of materials, and enjoys sharing his passion for fine weaving.
