About

When it comes to making boxes, we’ll examine key elements to look for while turning, including proportion, wall thickness, grain orientation, and the relationship between lid and base. Emphasis will be placed on developing an eye for form. In addition to core turning techniques, you'll be introduced to a range of embellishment options such as texturing, carving, and coloring. You'll be encouraged to experiment with all sorts of options!

By the end, you'll have a deeper understanding of both the technical and artistic considerations behind box turning, along with practical strategies for expanding your creativity and developing a more intentional approach to your work.

A $30 materials fee, included in the class fee, covers everything you need.

Prerequisites

  • You must have completed Intro to Woodturning and Wood Lathe Tool Sharpening.
  • Log in to your BARN account and click on "My event registrations" to ensure you will have completed the required prerequisites before this class begins.
  • If you have woodturning experience but haven't taken Intro to Woodturning at BARN, you may schedule a private session to demonstrate those skills in lieu of that class. Contact Jamie Straw at (360) 551-9233 at least 10 days before this class.

    • Class Policies

    • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
    • You must wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid dangling clothing and jewelry. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.
    Instructor
    Elizabeth Weber

    Born and raised in Tennessee, Elizabeth first specialized in engineering, earning an M.S. in civil engineering from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She began woodworking in 2015. Her early projects included several pieces of furniture in the Arts and Crafts style. She eventually turned to smaller objects and now specializes in bowls, spoons, and boxes. Her work ranges from simple forms with natural finishes to highly carved and painted forms that emulate natural motifs. Elizabeth teaches woodturning and carving around the country at schools including Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee, John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina, and Port Townsend School of Woodworking. She is president of her local woodturning club, the Seattle Woodturners. She was awarded the American Association of Woodturner’s 2023 Professional Outreach Program’s Artist Showcase and was featured on the cover of American Woodturner in January 2024.
