In this class you will learn how to turn a “hollow form” – the techniques are applied to a vase, urn or other vessel with a relatively small opening at the top and, typically, convex sides with fairly thin walls. In the first session, you will prepare your first piece of stock as you create the outside shape using tools you are familiar with. Then you will use specialized hollowing tools to remove wood from the inside and create an even wall thickness as measured with calipers, following lathe set-up tips to ensure you have enough room to maneuver your hollowing tools. This process may continue into the second session, and when the first piece is done, you will prepare and turn a second hollow for to help consolidate your hollow form turning skills. You will learn about an efficient finishing technique to protect and enhance your hollow form, and receive instruction on ways to cut stock from larger pieces while minimizing wood movement and warping.
Prerequisites:
- Open to students who have successfully completed BARN's Intro to Bowl Turning and Wood Lathe Tool Sharpening classes and have developed some proficiency in both spindle and bowl turning . Please login to your BARN account and click on "My event registrations" to ensure you will have completed the required prerequisites before this class begins.

Instructor:
Bob Abresch is a long-time woodworker who started turning in 2017 when the BARN facility opened. He has taken classes from several notable local turners and has enjoyed creating a variety of turned objects which, much to his surprise and delight, have been popular items at BARN’s annual bazaar.
