In spring and summer, tuteurs often hold up vines or help steady tall plants. As many garden plants die back in late fall and winter, they stand on their own as garden ornaments.

You'll cut strips of wood to length with a miter saw or hand saw, fasten them together with screws, and shape the finial ornament using a bandsaw. You can coat the ends that will be on the ground with a waterproofing coating in the class. Take your tuteur home to paint or stain whatever color you want.

This tuteur is about five feet tall. It was designed to use easily available strips of wood so you can later adapt the plan to make additional tuteurs of different heights and widths.

• Skill level: Beginners and beyond. Although designed for people with little to no woodworking experience, more seasoned woodworkers also are welcome.
• If you want to build additional tuteurs in the Woodworking Studio, you'll need to qualify for participating in Woodworking Open Studio.

Details

A $42 materials fee, included in the class fee, covers everything you need to build a tuteur and waterproof the bottom ends. It does not include paint or stain, which you can do at home. 

Class Policies

• Ages 14 and up are welcome.
• You must wear safety glasses (we recommend bringing your own) and closed-toe shoes.
• Tie back long hair, and avoid dangling clothing and jewelry.
