Haiku offers simplicity, depth, and the ability to evoke emotion and imagery with just a few carefully chosen words.

About this Class

This workshop provides an introduction to the art of haiku, with a focus on the historical and cultural context of Japanese and English haiku. You will learn about the development of haiku, its evolution as a unique form of poetry, and its influence on contemporary literature.

Through sample poems, you'll identify the prominent characteristics of haiku, such as the use of imagery, nature, and sensory details. This will provide a foundation for creating your own haiku.

The workshop will include opportunities for questions and answers, as well as writing prompts to stimulate creativity. You will be encouraged to write from memory, as well as use your own observations of the natural world to create original haiku.

You'll have the opportunity to share your own work if you wish. Additionally, you will explore the English-language haiku markets and the ways in which haiku is being published and recognized in the literary world.

By the end of this workshop, you'll have a deeper understanding of the history and techniques of haiku, as well as the tools to create your own haiku poems.

Class Policies

Instructor

Richard Tice has written haiku and other Japanese short forms since 1976. Fluent in Japanese, Richard has translated more than 200 Japanese haiku and published numerous articles on the genre and the relationship between the Japanese and English forms. Two collections of his haiku and related forms have been printed, "Station Stop" and "Familiar and Foreign."
