About
Learn the basics of woodturning and advance to making bowls in this one-week intensive.
Designed for high school students with no woodturning experience as well as students who have used a lathe at school, we'll cover material typically taught in BARN's Intro to Woodturning and Intro to Bowl Turning.
Begin by learning to shape a piece of wood secured at both ends while it's spinning on a lathe, a technique known as spindle turning. Then advance to bowl turning, where the wood is secured only at the bottom during final shaping.
Expect to make two bowls about 6 to 7 inches in diameter. Learn the best bowl shape for a novice
turner, how to safely mount a blank on the lathe, and how to use a
scroll chuck and bowl gouge for smooth and efficient cuts. Learn how to
maintain even wall thickness, and how to treat the bowl to prevent
cracking while it dries.
