About

Have you ever wanted to create your own unique t-shirts?

In this 4 session class you will learn the basics of how to create and print your own custom designs.

Silkscreening is a method of printing in which you can transfer images and text to fabric and paper by pushing ink through a very fine mesh screen. This is the perfect technique to print on fabric like t-shirts, bags, and anything else!

This in-depth introductory class offers students age 12-17 the opportunity to learn basic silkscreening techniques from start to finish.

Using your own designs, you will create two screens using both a “screen-filler” hand-painted technique and a photo emulsion technique. Knowledge of both these methods and thorough printing instruction will give you the skills to keep printing even after the class ends.

We will go over mixing inks, printing with two colors, registration (lining up two designs), heat-setting prints on fabric so it won't wash out, use of the Fiber Arts Studio wet-room for silkscreening and proper clean up.

Skill Level: Beginner! This is an introductory level silk screen class. No prior experience needed.

Age Level: Youth Class, Ages 12-17.

  • To register your youth please put in the NAME field your first name then in parenthesis put the youths first and last name (if different than yours).
  • Please complete and return this fill-able PDF minor permission form
  • Tuition assistance is available.  Click here to apply.
  • BARN reserves the right to cancel this class in the case of low enrollment and will notify families of this decision one week prior to the start of the class.  A full refund will be given.
  • If you have any questions, email JessH@bainbridgebarn.org

What to Bring:

  • a sketch of a design for your print ( no bigger than 8.5" x 11");
  • at least one t-shirt to print on, and anything else you would like to put your design on;
  • an apron to protect your clothes. Ink comes off of skin easily but stains clothing.

A $45 material fee is included in the cost of the class when you register. This includes 2 screens, screen filler, drawing fluid, emulsion, inks, and test paper.

Instructor Bio: Emily Browne is an artist who has been silkscreening for over 10 years. She currently creates handmade textile items with silkscreen designs under the business name My First Birds
