About

Learn about color theory and how it applies to nature. Color is helpful to know about, whether you're drawing, painting, gluing together a book, or collaging. Learning about why certain plants or animals have the colors and patterns that they do can help inform your art. You'll also learn about the concept of filling a page up with color, and then drawing line work, or collaging, on top of that color, as well as how to draw plants from life and design them with your imagination.
Learn how to make a nature journal out of a single sheet of paper, which ends up being 16 sheets after being folded, and fill it with drawings and specimens. Learn techniques for the specific words and images you can draw when observing the world around you in your nature journal.

On the second day, learn how to make unique handcrafted cards using collage, and how to combine images and words with lettering techniques if you choose to add words. You'll learn how to make a panorama cartoon story greeting card, which is a card that opens out from the middle.

On day three, learn about surface designs and patterns. You see patterns all the time in life, on clothes, backpacks, and things like books and book covers. You’ll notice just how many repetitive shape and color patterns there are in nature.  Learn how to create patterns of your own. You'll be encouraged to create patterns based on either real nature or imaginary plants, and have the choice to create patterns out of real specimens you can then glue into your books.

On the fourth day, create accordion books! These long fold-out books can be made as completely one-of-a-kind books, or as variations. You'll have the choice of doing a single- or double-sided accordion book, and what you've learned about surface designs may help especially for adding the covers.

On the last day, you'll get to add in pop-ups.  They can be included in pages where there's room, or as standalone cards. You can take the time you need to finish other projects, and your final project will be how to make a pop-up card, and/or put pop-ups into the books you’ve already made. Pop-ups are great as gifts, or just for fun. If you want to stick with the nature theme, you can create fun little image like a tree, bug, or flower that can pop out of the center of your work.

She has been teaching since 2010, teaching continuing education and classes at art centers, after-school programs, comic conventions, and libraries. She loves working with students and helping them discover their artistic passion and voice, whether that means telling a fantastical story through an illustration or comic, or realistically capturing a plant and its details at a particular moment. During her free time, she loves creating comics and handmade books, urban sketching, and exploring museums, gardens, coffee shops, anywhere with animals, and bookstores.
