About
Open to teens ages 14-18
Create a piece of your own design in wood as you become certified to use the major woodworking tools in the BARN Woodshop during Open Studio hours.
When you build something with wood, the wood can be purely functional, chosen for its width, length and strength. But wood can also be an incredibly beautiful material, with intriguing grain and color. In this class, you will learn to see wood in that second way, where an individual slice from a tree inspires you to create a shelf, tabletop, stool, toy/game-board or other object designed to “let the wood speak” about what it wants to be. Above all, bring your imagination and we will provide the tools and skills.
This is a five-session class that focuses on design and guidance so you can finish a project of your choice. You will be able to choose your wood from a selection that BARN will provide, and you will design what you want to make from it. You will also learn the basics of choosing materials, designing, drawing, building, detailing and finishing.
As part of this class, you will also complete Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1 and Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2, which are required before you can use the tools covered in them during Open Studio time. To participate in Open Studio, you must also attend our free, one-hour Orientation to the Woodshop Class. You can register for an Orientation class scheduled on the morning this class begins by clicking this link, or you can find other dates and times on the Woodworking calendar.
Depending on the project you choose, you may need to complete it outside of class. The instructors will be available to guide you during at least two Open Studio sessions the week after this class. Please try to take Orientation to the Woodshop before this class begins so that you can take advantage of these sessions, if necessary. Open Studio, which the Woodworking Studio offers 30 hours each week, is always free for BARN members ages 14 and older. Non-members can also participate, for $20 a day. However, that fee is waived for non-members who are working on a class project.

Instructors: Sandra Sanchez Palacios, assisted by Josh Haza.
Sandra grew up in Santiago, Chile, and spent the summers in the South of Chile, with her grandparents in their small house with a giant garden and her Grandpa’s woodshop. This is where her love for woodworking began. Ever since, she has had her own woodshop, taken many classes at a community college in Seattle, and learned from other skilled woodworker. Working and collaborating with other artists is a challenge she seeks. "Iit inspires me to continue learning and designing original pieces that bring beauty to the spaces they inhabit," she says. Her work has been featured at The Art Project, a gallery on Bainbridge Island.
Josh teaches many of the woodshop tool safety classes at BARN, as well as numerous other woodworking classes. He has been building furniture for his home and doing home renovations for a few decades now.
