This class is designed to take pressure off students and parents surrounding what can—but needn’t—be an overly stressful process. We will discuss how to “triage” various essay prompts, how to make keeping track of deadlines and requirements as painless as possible, how to select a topic (i.e., a favorite story to tell about yourself), and how to begin structuring that story into a narrative that shows authentic self-awareness—and one that moves, interests, and perhaps even amuses you and your readers (college admissions officials) in the process. As in a typical writing workshop, we will begin to try those stories out on each other and offer constructive input as requested.

Age Level: Youth Class, Ages 13-18.

Kirsten Foster has worked with high school students as a language and writing tutor and college essay advisor for over 15 years. She is the owner and founder of The Old Boar Study Commons, a tutoring and study hall in downtown Winslow on Bainbridge Island. A former attorney, she practiced general litigation and intellectual property law at Perkins Coie, LLP in Seattle. She studied Comparative Literature and European History at UC San Diego (with exchange terms at NYU in Paris, Dartmouth and UC Berkeley), where she tutored in the writing program and was nominated for a Mellon Fellowship by the Dean of American Literature. She later accepted a fellowship to study English in the Ph.D. program at Tulane University in New Orleans before eventually earning her J.D. with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin. There she served on the Legal Research and Writing Board and as an Editor on the American Journal of Criminal Law.
