About

Registration is now closed for this class.

For anyone ages 12-15

This BARN boatbuilding class is offered in an exciting collaboration with Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park and Recreation so that you can build your own boat -- and then learn to sail it too. In the BARN class, you will be learning how to build the Puddle Duck Racer. (PDRacer) a racing sailboat that is the easiest boat in the world to build. The simple hull can be made from 3 sheets of plywood, some glue, and fasteners. You will be able to build this complete sailboat in 2 weeks.

Then join your classmates on the water and learn to sail your PDRacer through the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park and Recreation District's program.

Beginners are completely welcome as this is an introductory sailing course, no sailing experience is necessary. Participants will learn how to rig, launch, sail, and dock their Puddle Ducks while exploring our local Bainbridge waters.  To register to sail your PDRacer, click here. or call BI Parks & Rec office at (206) 842-2306 x1 and reference activity #430710-01.

There will be an added Materials fee of $400 to the price of the class when you register.

  • Please bring this permission slip to the first day of class.
  • Minimal financial assistance available. Please apply here.
  • If you would like BARN to know any specific information about your child's allergies or learning needs, please email Julie Leung: julie@bainbridgebarn.org

Instructor:

Jim Dagata, an outdoor enthusiast, was raised near the water, and he has spent most of his life around water. College life ended with a degree in Marine Science Biology before moving West to work. He spent ten seasons teaching outdoor experiential education for Pacific Crest Outward Bound School out of Central Oregon, educating students ages 13- 60 on rivers and in the mountains. Jim has built hollow wood surfboards, cajón drums, and a number of other wood projects. After being out of experiential education for some time, life changes have brought him back to teaching, this time in the woodshop and back on the water mentoring mostly youth. You may see Jim around Bainbridge this Summer on the water, sailing or paddling some type of craft or with his Border Collie, Hobie, riding in the sidecar of his motorcycle.
