Learn the art and science of steam-bending wood from a furniture maker known for the way she incorporates curves into furniture, sculptures, and art installations. Your instructor, award-winning woodworker and sculptor Yuri Kobayashi, uses her craft to explore and express emotion through three-dimensional objects. Born in Japan, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in architectural design at Musashino Art University in Tokyo and then trained in woodworking at Shinrin Takumi Juku in Takayama City. She also holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in furniture design from San Diego State University and for many years taught at the Rhode Island School of Design. You can see her work on her website.

In this intensive workshop, you'll learn technical details — wood choices, thickness, time in the steam chamber — and how to navigate issues that are more lyrical as you design and make a floor lamp with steam-bent details. The image for this class is of a table lamp in the instructor’s Scribbler series. Your lamp’s shape will be unique, based on the way you choose to bend your wood pieces!

Yuri was quoted in American Craft magazine in 2021: "When I began, I didn’t know English. I learned to communicate my feelings and thoughts in my work. The thoughts themselves are both simple and complicated, and, yes, poetic.”
