About

So you want to shoot a documentary, artist statement video, or an interview, but you’re not sure how?

In this two-day intensive, we will cover how to capture professional looking footage with nothing but your smartphone and minimal gear.

Day one: we will explore basic lighting techniques, how to shoot with or without a light kit, where to source affordablelighting, sound and camera gear that you can easily handle if you’re shooting solo. Learn how to film in just about any location or  environment with quality results.

Day two: with the guidance of the instructor each student will set up, light and shoot their own one minute test video to keep as reference for future practice and revision.

Supplies Needed:

  • iPhone/iPad or Android phone/tablet.
  • Bring your own lighting and sound equipment if you have any.
  • A laptop, tablet or phone with editing software on it would be great to bring if you have it.

Details:

  • Prerequisites: A basic knowledge of video editing would be good. A laptop, tablet or smartphone with editing software would be great.
  • Feel free to bring a lunch. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave in the kitchen on the lower level.
  • Please click here for BARN's current COVID-19 health & safety protocols.
  • BARN is committed to accessibility. Tuition Assistance is available - click here to fill out the simple application before registering for a class. For those who might need physical assistance, please learn about BARN's Companion Program here.

Instructor Bio:

Courtney G. Jones is a 30 year veteran of the film & television industry who has been an advocate for the kind of accessibility mobile filmmaking brings to creators for several years. Not only does Courtney serve as Head of Development for Steve Zahn & Rick Gomez’s company, Macaroni Art Productions, but he has produced and directed feature films, commercials, documentaries, and series… some of which have been shot on mobile. Mr. Jones brings a wealth of technical and creative know-how to the classroom.

Courtney’s main goal with teaching mobile content creation is to show that anyone can make something amazing with the technology that is in their pocket.

When Courtney is not writing, producing, filming, editing or teaching, he’s typically daydreaming about flying, living on a boat, or trying out new recipes in the kitchen.
