About

This class has been canceled. 11/22/22-CR

This class has a prerequisite. Please see below before you register.

This class builds on introductory stitched Shibori techniques, where stitching in a straight line on a single layer of fabric creates a random look, giving a textural effect. In this next-level class, we’ll use this same straight stitch on a grid to bring control and create a distinct repeat in an organized stitch pattern.

The process begins with drawing your grid on fabric and requires precision throughout this entire procedure—row widths and lengths and stitch size matter to achieve the desired overall design.

We will explore grids on a single piece of fabric, as well as folding and stitching through several layers of fabric. Using grids has endless possibilities and will challenge your creativity in exploring this fascinating Shibori technique.

During the first session, we’ll plan and stitch samples and the final project. . During the second session, we’ll dye everything and remove all the stitching to reveal our glorious patterns!

The instructor will provide all materials including silk fabric for samples, hemmed scarves for the final project, thread, needles, and dyes. Additional scarves will be available to purchase from the instructor

Instructor:

Diana Gipson is a fiber artist and teacher whose love of sewing began at an early age. After raising a family, she returned to college and graduate school, where she was introduced to the Japanese design techniques of shibori stitching, fold and clamp, and pole wrapping. Hand-stitching on silk immediately became the predominant focus of her fiber art. She has continued to create shibori wall art and clothing, as well as teaching design and hand-dyeing workshops. Since moving to Port Townsend and then to Bainbridge Island from Boise, Idaho, where she taught art at Boise State, her shibori work has been shown locally in galleries and exhibitions, and her shibori clothing has been exhibited in P.T. Wearable Art Shows. She recently designed and executed shibori-stitched and dyed coordinated vestments for the Episcopal Church in Port Townsend.
