Sewing machines are terrific, but every once in a while -- because the area you need to stitch is very small or because you need control, softness, or invisibility, or because you just like the look -- you need to stitch by hand.

Fortunately, it is easy, and you are probably already using these stitches or variations -- even if you don't know their names.

This lab will cover 5 basic hand stitches (right-handed or left-handed stitching) and when to use them:

• the back stitch
• the prick stitch (it is a back stitch variation)
• the slip stitch
• the catch stitch
• the fell stitch.

If there is time, as a bonus, we'll cover the overcast stitch.

We will also talk about arguments for and against using beeswax on your thread and ironing your thread before stitching.
