About

This class will take you through the whole process of making a pair of pants from start to finish! This class is open to anyone who wants to learn to make pants and is specifically planned to be gender and size inclusive. These pants have all the features you need for a comfortable and stylish fit: pockets, comfortably loose fit, and a drawstring waist supplemented with elastic (no one likes droopy pants). They are made of woven fabric, so they are easy for beginners to sew while also creating a nice product.

Using the Fremantle Pants pattern from Elbe Textiles you will learn the following skills:

  • Choosing an appropriate pattern size
  • Making minor pattern adjustments for body type
  • Cutting pattern pieces from fabric
  • Finishing seams and using bias binding
  • Creating an elastic waist with a drawstring channel
  • Pressing and hemming for a high-quality finish

Details

Students should come with all materials necessary for this project:

  • Copy of the Fremantle Pants pattern (if you purchase a digital copy and print it at home, please tape the pattern together before coming to class)
  • Sufficient woven fabric for your size of pants. If you are completely new to sewing, ask at a fabric store for help choosing your fabric and figuring out how much you need
  • Lining fabric for pockets (can use scraps from the Fiber Studio if you wish)
  • Matching thread
  • 2" elastic for waistband
  • Drawstring

All materials can be purchased at Esther's Fabrics on Bainbridge Island with a 10% discount for students of the class.

Prerequisites

All students should be comfortable with the basic use of a sewing machine. You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine,. If you would like to use a studio machine you need to have completed Orientation to Fiber Sewing Machines. These machines are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Instructor
Betsy Hagestedt

Betsy has been working with fiber since she was in elementary school, having learned to sew and knit from her mom. As an anthropologist, she uses her fiber practice as a means of connecting with people from other cultures, embracing the universal nature of fiber arts. Knitting gradually became her specialization due to its portability as she began to travel around the world. You can see some of her fiber experiments on her Instagram feed at behestknits. Since starting at BARN she has been learning as many new skills as possible. She is highly involved in torchworking in the Glass Studio, and has started dabbling with welding and woodturning.
