Setting is more than just a backdrop. Distinct, vivid settings can help you create mood, establish your story’s wider world, and even develop your characters. In this workshop, we’ll look at both classic and modern texts to learn how setting can create a variety of effects. We’ll also use prompts to craft settings that are unique and authentic. Workshop participants will create new work in class, but are welcome to bring their works-in-progress to use in some of the exercises.

Instructor Bio:

Tina Tocco is a Pushcart Prize nominee. Her work has appeared in many journals and anthologies, including New Ohio Review, River Styx, Crab Creek Review, Passages North, Potomac Review, Italian Americana, Best Small Fictions 2019, and Best Nonfiction Food (2020). Tina earned her MFA in creative writing from Manhattanville College, where she was editor-in-chief of Inkwell. She is a Reader in Residence for the flash fiction journal SmokeLong Quarterly and teaches both adults and teens for various arts organizations.
