About

Learn to make and work with wood veneer that is more versatile than the typical veneer you can buy ready-made, and go home with a veneered tray of your own design.

Through discussion and demonstration, master furniture maker Aaron Levine will explain the benefits and challenges of working with veneer custom-cut on a band saw. Topics to be covered:

  • Why you might want to use veneer and the design possibilities it offers.
  • How to select wood for veneering.
  • How to adjust BARN's 36-inch bandsaw (which Levine used to own) and use a jig to ensure uniform veneer slices about 1/8 inch thick.
  • How to sand, arrange, and glue the veneer, using BARN's vacuum press.
  • How to prepare a veneered piece for application of a finish.

In this class and in Open Studio time between class sessions, if needed, you will cut and apply veneer to make a tray to take home. The materials fee covers the base material, a square about 15 inches on each side. You will be responsible for providing wood for the veneer pieces. BARN has wood on hand that you can purchase or you can bring your own wood. Wood options will be discussed at the first session.

Instructor: Aaron Levine is a Bainbridge Island furniture maker whose museum-quality pieces often feature surfaces covered with intricate, Escheresque marquetry. He always custom-cuts the veneers.
