About

Learn how to take your now-dry bowl — that you originally turned from wet, green wood — and create a finished project. You'll learn how to true the tenon and outside shape then mount into the chuck and complete the inside.

You may need to do the sanding and surface finishing on your own in Wood Open Studio or a Guided Woodturning Open Studio, but the techniques will be briefly explained and shown by the instructor.

If you don't have a dry, warped bowl to bring to class, please let the instructor know via wood.turning@bainbridgebarn.org and a bowl will be provided free of charge.

Materials

A $5 materials fee, included in the price of the class, covers all you'll need.

Prerequisites

    • If  you have bowl turning experience, you can request a skills review in lieu of the bowl-turning class by contacting Jamie Straw at wood.turning@bainbridgebarn.org no fewer than 10 days before this class.
    • If you plan to use your own tools, you can sharpen them however you want. If you use BARN's tools, you must have taken the Wood Lathe Tool Sharpening class.

Class Policies

Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Instructor
Jamie Straw

Jamie has been turning wood for many years, working on both spindle and bowl projects, and has taught woodturning at BARN since July 2017. She also serves as coordinator of BARN’s woodturning program. She is a past vice president for education and training for the local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. Her focus is on helping students build skills progressively as they design and create their woodturning projects.
