Discover new ways to enhance your art practice using paper string to make beautiful two- and three-dimensional sculptural forms.

Using age-old basketry techniques such as weft twining with variations, you'll create beautiful and meaningful contemporary pieces. We'll cover basic paired twining, twining with inserts, three-strand twining, and open twining.

You can choose to make a single larger project or a cache of smaller samples of sculptural forms and 2D wall art as you explore materials, form, process, and visual language that reflect the patterns and shapes found in the natural world.

Some of the options you have are mini wall mat, mini blooms, or sculptural twined pods.

You can choose your own projects so that you can take away the skills and ability to work independently.

• All skill levels are welcome, but note that some manual dexterity is required.
• Bring a sack lunch each day. A microwave and refrigerator are available on the lower level.

Details

• You need to bring:
  • A notepad and pens/pencils for sketching
  • Found materials such as driftwood, shells, rocks, personal ephemera.
• In class, you'll need small and large scissors, a tape measure, and a leather lacing tool or grip fid. You may bring your own or use tools from the Fiber Arts Studio.
• A $30 materials fee, included in the cost of this class, covers all the paper string of different types and thickness to complete the projects you choose with extra to take home for other projects.
