About

In this discussion-based class, you'll work through the chapters and exercises in Ursula K. Le Guin's classic craft book "Steering the Craft: Sailing the Sea of Story."

Over the five sessions, we'll cover the sound of your writing, how to play with punctuation and grammar, sentence length and syntax, repetition, point of view, and voice (among other topics).

Each writer should expect to read two assigned chapters before class and complete one to two writing exercises each week. In class, we'll discuss the chapters and writing exercises, as well as perform an additional in-class writing exercise. The point is sharing what we've learned from the chapters and exercises. Come prepared to discuss the material and your work.

• Skill level: Most helpful for intermediate to advanced writers looking to improve elements of their craft.
• If you've already read and worked through the exercises in "Steering the Craft," doing so again in a group setting can reveal additional layers.
