About

Suquamish Elder Ed Carriere is a master basket weaver, a canoe builder and skipper, a totem pole restorer, and a cultural teacher. Tonight, he will share how the traditional craft of weaving with native plants, taught to him by his great-grandmother Julia Jacobs, has taken him on a journey of learning around the world.

Carriere has been the subject of films, books and articles.  Many who have studied with Ed have gone on to become master weavers and cultural educators in their own communities.

At this presentation, two short films that share Ed’s work, by Katie Jennings of New Canoe Films, will be interspersed with Ed’s recent story of working with archaeologist Dale Croes to recreate ancient baskets found in Pacific Northwest wet-sites.  Ed will bring examples of his work that demonstrate more than 200 generations of weaving knowledge.

Carrier will be introduced by Melinda West, who will be teaching "Long Life Maker," a workshop where the project is making a folded cedar pouch, on June 10 and 11.
