Making a personal profile documentary is the perfect start to video storytelling. A short, 2 to 5- minute piece is the film making equivalent of making a cutting board in the wood shop. It’s a way to learn tools, techniques, and workflow in this powerful medium.

Join Katie Jennings for this introductory overview. No matter what camera you use, the same thinking goes into video storytelling: choosing the story, envisioning a narrative arc, planning shoots, lighting and capturing scenes, organizing footage, writing a script, editing, and packaging your film.

Come to class with your idea for a short personal profile and we’ll walk it through these steps. This is a safe supportive space to float ideas and get started on your dream project.

Instructor Bio:
Katie Jennings is an award winning PBS documentary filmmaker and owner of New Canoe Media. She works with artists, scientists, educators, First Nation elders and Fortune 500 companies to make sure their essential messages make it to the screen. Katie was on staff at KCTS/9 as a producer/executive producer for 15 years and Head of IslandWood Media for another 9. She has taught documentary filmmaking through the UW Extension School, George Washington University, 911 Media Arts and IslandWood.
