Learn the basics of turning wood on a lathe in this introductory class that will focus on using the lathe to make wood pens. Students will make one or more wood pens during this class and will learn all the required steps to make a pen using the lathe.

The class will also cover safety, wood selection, tool types, sharpening, and lathe adjustment and accessories, including different chucks and mandrels used for pen making.  All wood and supplies are provided for class projects. Estimated materials fee for making two pens is $5.

The first evening of this class will be an introduction to the lathe and all the steps required in pen making.  The following session will  be split, with some students attending from 5 to 7 p.m. and others from 7 to 9 p.m. This will allow each student access to a lathe during the entire period.

No previous experience is necessary.
