About

Create multiples, mobiles, and mixed-media pieces as you discover the expressive possibilities of paper through hands-on experimentation with color, pattern, texture, and structure with an emphasis on process, repetition, and play, allowing ideas to emerge through making and series-based work.

This is a new iteration of a 2024 workshop that influenced the design and creation of last year’s Night at BARN, lead by the same instructor. This continues the exploration of paper as a sculptural, collaborative, and installation-ready medium.

  • Day One focuses on transformation and surface. You'll be introduced to a range of tools, materials, and techniques for painting, mark-making, and constructing paper using paint and other media. Working from examples and demonstrations, you'll transform plain paper into richly worked material, then begin building sewn constructions and multiples. You will paint with abandon! Embellishment, iteration, and group feedback are woven throughout the day.
  • Day Two expands into structure, exchange, and form. You'll look at examples of sculptures and books created with mixed-media approaches, followed by a paper “potluck” and trading session — an opportunity to share and exchange portions of your painted papers with fellow artists. Folding techniques such as free fold, pop-up, and accordion structures will be explored as frameworks for sculptural development. You'll continue working into series through cutting, piercing, sewing, embossing, punching, and embellishment, with demonstrations and discussion around mobiles and installation considerations.

Details

  • This can be taken as a complete, stand-alone experience or as part of a series with Paper Enclosures: Integrated Case and Contents. Together, the two workshops offer a deeper investigation into paper-based practice.
  • Bring water, a snack, and lunch. We'll take a 30-minute lunch break around noon.
  • Wear clothes that can get a little messy, as you'll be working with paint and other materials.
  • In consideration of the instructor’s health (MS and MCS), please refrain from wearing scented products.

Details

A $30 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you'll need.
