About

BARN Members: $85 (2 sessions)

7-9pm Tuesday & Wednesday, May 19 & 20

Wow!  This is going to be a fabulous, creative, and "fun-tastic" workshop.  Heidi Dascher from the Artful Ewe in Port Gamble will teach us how to use nuno felting techniques to create a chic wool felted hat.

Nano technique uses a gauzy fabric like silk or chiffon to serve as an anchor for wool fibers. The wool fibers are drawn up through the silk/chiffon to create a fabric that can be molded to create hats, coats, and other articles of clothing.  We included some photos of Heidi's wool felted hats.  Now you know why we are so excited.

A materials fee is still being determined. If you register before it is posted, we will email it to you as soon as it's decided.

INSTRUCTOR: Heidi Dascher is the owner of the beguiling Artful Ewe, a store in Port Gamble filled with Heidi’s hand-dyed and spun yarn, batts and felted hats and cloaks.  She has a corner of the shop with over-stuffed chairs where her guests/clients come to sit and spin fiber, knit, crochet, or do other hand work with fibers.

When she isn’t at the shop, Heidi is at home, creating her own unique inventory of batts, felts, and skeins—winding, hand-dyeing, hand-painting, washing, drying, carding, and spinning. “I make up my own color recipes, like a painter’s palette," she says. "Some days, I feel like it is a color-dyeing day; others, a hand-painting day."

Learn the basics of crocheting with wire. Wire is a fun departure for those used to working with yarn. It comes in a variety of sizes and colors. Wire sizing is described in numerical gauge, with higher numbers for thinner wire and lower numbers for thicker wire. Typically, wire sized at 28 gauge and above is used for knit and crochet.

We will make a basic shape that can be morphed into a variety of projects. Once the basics are learned we'll explore what contemporary artists have created with wire including beading.

Wire has memory and stiffness that yarn doesn’t have. This makes it harder on your hands and harder on your tools. Don't use your prize tools for these projects: use steel or aluminum tools since wood, bamboo and plastic will scratch.
