About

Build a unique bench or small table from one or more thick slabs of wood in this five-session class. Depending on the wood you choose, you will be able to create a piece that's almost sculptural because of its rich, swirling grain or intriguing color known as spalting. You can preserve a natural edge, if you wish.

At the first, the instructors will discuss suitable wood and design options, including your choice of styles for the wood base. The next three sessions, each 3 hours long, will be devoted to building your project and preparing it for final finish. On the Thursday evenings after the second and third sessions, one of the instructors will be in the shop during open studio time so you can do additional work on your project. At the final session, you will learn about finish options and will go home with enough finish to apply multiple coats.

Details:

  • There is a $10 materials fee to cover the finish, epoxy and other shop supplies. This will be collected online when you register and pay. If you pay by check, please add that to the class fee.
  • You will need to supply the wood for your project. You can buy wood from BARN, purchase it elsewhere or bring what you have from your wood stash. The moisture issues associated with use of BARN's Sawstop table saws aren't critical for this project unless your slab is thicker than 2 inches.
  • Beginners are welcome, but please enroll in our three-hour Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1 and 2 classes ahead of time. If the classes listed on the calendar are full, please email using this form and we will open a spot for you.
  • You will be able to store your wood in the woodshop between sessions.

Instructors: Carol Fiedler Kawaguchi and Kristina Avramovic Oldani. Carol is a professional woodworker who specializes in restoration of antique furniture through her business, C-Saw, on Bainbridge Island. She also makes custom furniture, including the slab coffee table in the Commons at BARN. Kristina began working with wood at a young age alongside her carpenter father. She  worked her way through college restoring mid-century furniture and later built slab furniture for Coyote Woodshop on Bainbridge Island.
