About

If you're bringing it down to the wire, we're with you!

NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month. Every year, hundreds of thousands of writers attempt a great adventure during November. These aspiring novelists race to put down 50,000 words in just 30 days.

NaNoWriMo has helped kick off the drafting of many published novels like "The Night Circus," "Wool," "Water for Elephants," "Cinder," and "The Wedding Date."

Although originally intended for novel writers, the event has expanded to whatever writing project you want to commit to for November. The community of NaNoWriMo writers find kindred spirits, share ideas, and join in word sprints at NaNoWriMo.org, online forums, and Discord communities.

BARN's Writers’ studio is hosting regular (free) write-ins during the month of November where we can cheer each other on and keep the fires of inspiration burning.

Instructor
Emily Smiley

Emily, a writer from South Carolina who now calls Seattle home, crafts stories that reflect the world back to her readers, inviting them to explore deeper truths within themselves. Her novel, Treading Water, came in first in the horror category of the 2024 Pacific Northwest Writers' Association (PNWA) unpublished competition. She’s the programming coordinator for the Writer’s Studio at BARN. She’s also a member of the PNWA and the Seattle Chapter of the Horror Writers Association. Emily is a co-founder of Content Hospital, a speculative fiction writers marketing collective, and is represented by A.J. Van Belle at the Booker Albert Literary Agency. When she’s not giving her readers nightmares, she’s running, traveling, reading, or playing video games.
