Print one three-color image multiple times on fabric and paper in this two-day workshop focused on screen printing, an ancient method of transferring pigment to a surface. Experienced printmaker Dana Harris Seeger will guide you through every step of the process.

Traditionally, each color in a multi-colored image would need separate screens, but with the reduction method, you’ll use just one screen to make a multi-colored print. All aspects of screen printing will be covered, including how to transfer an image to the screen and set up the screen for printing, as well as learning what types of inks can be used and how to heat set for washing the fabric. 

Day 1: Friday, October 23, 10 AM - 3 PM

• Brief lecture on the history of screen printing, what types of imagery you can expect from different methods, and how to use the screen for a range of results.
• Demonstration of proper setup, including screen prep and image design.
• Demonstration of creating the different color “separations” for each print.
• Demonstration of proper image creation with the screen filler and how to print each color successively (and successfully).
• Learn how water-based ink works and how to get the correct color overlay.
• You’ll create your separations and print your first color. Then clean the screen and prep for the second color.

Day 2: Friday, October 30, 10 AM - 3 PM

• You’ll print the second color, clean up, and paint out the third color. 
• After cleanup and heat setting, we’ll have a show-and-tell.

Details

• Dress for a mess! Dyes and ink are made to stain, so wear dark clothing or clothes you don't mind getting stained.
• Bring a bag lunch. A communal refrigerator and microwave are available near the stairs on BARN's lower level.

Materials

• A $10 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers all the ink, paper, and fabrics for this project. 
• Students should bring a color drawing or printout, 8 1/2 x 11” for design inspiration.
