Shop-made veneers are much thicker than commercially made veneers so you can sand furniture or other project without undue risk of wearing through the veneer. But you still get the benefits of commercial veneer: efficient use of rare wood and resistance to warping when glued to base material that doesn't shrink or swell significantly as humidity shifts.

In this demonstration-only class, you will learn to make your own veneer. Starting with rough-cut hardwood 2 inches thick, the instructor will show how to use the jointer, bandsaw, and large belt sander in an efficient sequence. He will also show how to prepare veneer edges for nearly invisible glue joints.

Prerequisites

This class has no pre-requirements, but if you want to make your own veneers at BARN, you will need to first take Orientation to the Woodshop, Woodshop Tool Safety  Checkout 1 and Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2.

Class Policies

• Ages 14 and up are welcome.

• You must wear closed-toe shoes and safety glasses. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.
