About

BARN Member: $108
Non-Member: $130

Saturdays, Sept. 17 & 24 and Oct. 1 from 9 am to 12 pm

Materials fee:  $15 payable in class

This three-session class will utilize both hand and power tools and the objective is to create a step stool (similar to the one pictured) that is custom made for the builder.
To do this the following elements will be introduced and developed:

  • Basic elements of design including ratios.
  • How to “measure” without numbers.
  • What a “story stick” is and how to use it.
  • What a “mock-up” tells you about the design.

Students must be fully checked out on the table saw, planer, joiner and band saw.

Students should also have a basic understanding of hand tools and be able, or willing to learn, to make hand-cut mortice and tenon joints as well as dovetail joints. An overview of these skills will be given and students may practice as time allows. The joints used are a reasonable size so there is room for some variance in the fit.

The materials provided will be:

  • Cardboard for the mock-up.
  • Wood (pine and walnut) for the stool and story stick.
  • Glue and fasteners.

The only item for which there is a charge is the wood and that will be collected at the start of the class.

Instructor:  A hand tool devotee, Dick Culp has taken many classes at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking and will be sharing what he's learned. He serves on the school's Board of Directors and was a director of Bainbridge Island Community Woodshop until it merged with BARN at the end of 2013.
