In this 2 session class you will learn to make your own chef’s knife from premium A2 steel and black linen Micarta handles from scratch and take it home following the class. There is also a 3-hour open studio to come back and put the finishing touches on your knife.

This class will cover the following:

  • Use a plasma cutter to cut out your blade profile in steel
  • Learn how to use a 2x72 professional knife grinder to profile, shape and finish your blade and handle
  • Use a drill press to drill through steel and handle material
  • Use a metal cutting band-saw to cut handle pin stock
  • Master putting a professional quality finish on steel
  • This class is for anyone who would like to learn the steps in 
    making their own knives from scratch.

Details:

There is a $50 materials fee for steel, handle material and consumables which will be added to the registration cost. 

The additional materials fee for this class includes all material for the knife including premium 1/8” A2 tool steel, black linen micarta for the handle, and appropriate safety gear. Heat treating of the blades will be provided prior to attaching the handles.

Following this class, you will be familiar with using all of the tools for making your own knife, or even a set of knives. The is an intensive class, however, most students will complete their knife in two 2-hour instructional sessions and the following 3-hour open studio on the third evening.

You will also be instructed on proper safety for dealing with dust and abrasive materials. Students are recommended to dress in comfortable clothes and be prepared to get a little dusty. Sturdy shoes are required. Hoodies, scarves or other loose clothing that can be pulled into the grinder are not allowed.

Class is limited to 2 students. So register early!

Mark is a serious hobbyist who has converted several different machine tools from manual to CNC. He is a knife maker and has done some high performance automobile work.
