About

In this 3 session class you will learn to make your own chef’s knife from premium A2 steel and black linen Micarta handles from scratch and take it home following the class.

This class will cover the following:

  • Use a plasma cutter to cut out your blade profile in steel
  • Learn how to use a 2x72 professional knife grinder to profile, shape and finish your blade and handle
  • Use a drill press to drill through steel and handle material
  • Use a metal cutting bandsaw to cut handle pin stock
  • Master putting a professional quality finish on steel
  • This class is for anyone who would like to learn the steps in making their own knives from scratch.

There is an additional $50 materials fee for steel, handle material and consumables that will be added to the class cost when you register.

The additional materials fee for this class includes all material for the knife including premium 1/8” A2 tool steel, handle material, and appropriate safety gear. Heat treating of the blades will be provided prior to attaching the handles.

Following this class, you will be familiar with the use of all the tools to make your own knife or even a set of knives. The class is intensive, and most students can complete their own knife in two to three 2-hour sessions. Please note the different times for the classes: Thursday, January 10: 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12: class is from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

You will be also be instructed on proper safety for dealing with dust and abrasive materials and it is suggested students dress in comfortable clothes and be prepared to get a little dusty. No hoody’s, scarfs or clothing that can be pulled into the grinder.

Class is limited to 4 students. So register early! Another class is being offered beginning Tuesday, January 23. Please see the Metal Arts calendar.
