About

Coptic binding is an ancient technique, named after the Copts, who were early Christians in Egypt. Their binding methods were used from as early as the 2nd century AD to the 11th century and are adaptable to contemporary materials. It can be made without using glue, and features a decorative chain stitch across an open spine. Unlike many bindings, a Coptic-bound book will lie flat when open.

You'll work with decorative papers, binder's board, and folded pages to create a hand-bound book with a Coptic-stitched binding. Using decorative papers and cold-mount adhesive, you'll create hard covers and liners. Then you'll sew folded pages to the covers with a chain stitch. At the end of class, everyone will have a completed, handmade book suitable for a journal or sketchbook, along with the information needed to create more books!

A materials fee of $25, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you'll need. Materials provided include:

• Davey board, a high-quality cardboard
• Decorative papers for the cover
• Rives BFK white paper for the pages
• Waxed linen binder's thread
• Bone folder
• X-acto knives and other cutting tools
• Binder's needles (straight and curved)
• Scotch Positionable Mounting Adhesive
