About

This class has been canceled. We apologize for the inconvenience. 1/19/23-CR

Do you need an expensive cinema camera to create beautiful video? The answer is a big fat “NO!”

Modern smartphones are like having a full studio in your pocket. What once took multiple people, a truck full of gear and tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, can now slip into your pocket or a bag, giving you TV- or cinema-quality images.

In this course, you learn advanced lighting and shooting techniques by dissecting and recreating some classic shots/scenes in cinema and television using your mobile device.

You also learn about the apps used to capture the footage, what types of lights are out there for you to use, how to shoot with natural or available light, the importance of color correction/grading in editing, and gear for capturing better images no matter what phone you have.

Materials

  • You must have a smartphone with a camera. Either iPhone/iPad or Android phone/tablet are required.
  • It would be great to have a dedicated video capture app like Filmic Pro, Cinema P3, Moment, etc. installed before class.

Details:

  • Prerequisites: None, but it would be good to have taken How to Shoot Better Video with Your Smartphone.
  • Feel free to bring a lunch. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.
  • Please click here for BARN's current COVID-19 health & safety protocols.
  • BARN is committed to accessibility. Tuition Assistance is available - click here to fill out the simple application before registering for a class. For those who might need physical assistance, please learn about BARN's Companion Program here.

Instructor:

Courtney G. Jones - A 30-year veteran of the film and television industry, Courtney has been an advocate for the kind of accessibility mobile filmmaking brings to creators for years. Not only does he serve as head of development for Steve Zahn & Rick Gomez’s company, Macaroni Art Productions, but he has produced and directed feature films, commercials, documentaries, and series - some of which have been shot on mobile devices. He brings a wealth of technical and creative know-how to the classroom.

Courtney’s main goal with teaching mobile content creation is to show that anyone can make something amazing with the technology that is in their pocket.

When he is not writing, producing, filming, editing, or teaching, he’s typically daydreaming about flying, living on a boat, or trying out new recipes in the kitchen.
